BASES Early-to mid-Career Researcher Project Grant

Aim and eligibility:

This Project Grant provides an opportunity for an early-to mid-career researcher to help develop their professional identity.

Applicants must have obtained a PhD or Professional Doctorate within the last 10 years (whichever came first). One grant will be available per year. You can apply for up to a total of £5000. This grant is intended to enable research where the resources, equipment and infrastructure already exists to support the intended activities. Therefore, applications for funds to support time and consumables, rather than resources, equipment and infrastructure will be considered more favourable. Applications should also make it clear that all other elements are in place to enable successful completion of the intended activities.

Grant criteria:

• The applicant must have been a Professional Member of BASES for at least one full year.
• The applicant must be within 10 years of completing their PhD or Professional Doctorate (whichever came first). BASES will consider making adjustments on a needs basis for individuals who have taken a career break within the first five years of their career; for example, for maternity leave or leave due to illness.
• The applicant must read and will comply with the Terms and Conditions of the BASES Project Grant.
• The applicant must submit the application form and a two-page CV. Only information contained within the application form and the CV will be considered by the Chairs of the Divisions.
• If successful, you will be asked to provide a report and to present the findings at the annual BASES conference.
  

Assessment:

Each application is assessed against the following criteria:

• The extent to which the grant will enable the applicant’s personal career development.
• The projected impact of the proposed work and how the grant will enable this.
• The applicant’s overall contribution to BASES.
• That the applicant has not submitted a BASES Project Grant application within the past year.
• That the applicant has not received a BASES Project Grant within the past three years.

• Two-page CV
• Supporting letter from Line Manager
• Proposed work:
• Please provide a title for the project
• Please provide a lay summary of the project (up to 400 words)
• Please outline how this grant will enable your personal career progression (up to 400 words)
• Please outline your contribution to BASES to date (up to 200 words)
• Please provide the date when you completed your PhD or Professional Doctorate (whichever came first)
• Please outline the project plan and include the background, aim and objectives, hypotheses, study design, data analyses and dissemination strategy (up to 2000 words)

Terms and Conditions:

This schedule, together with the requirements set out in the application guidelines and any subsequent grant offer letter, constitute the agreement between BASES and the recipient.

BASES Project Grants (up to the maximum) may be used for:

• Staff costs to undertake the project (your time or a casual research assistant), but does not include indirect costs.
• Fees for courses / workshops etc. specifically related to development of skills and knowledge appropriate to the proposed work.
• Purchase of equipment / consumables specifically for use in the applied work.
  

BASES Project Grants may not be used for:

• Paying for BASES Supervised Experience supervision.
• Membership of professional bodies, etc
• Costs to present any findings at a conference (i.e., for conference travel, accommodation or registration costs).
• Support for work directly associated with a course/degree for which the applicant is already registered.
  

The grant awarded shall not be used for any purpose other than that stated in the grant offer letter.

The decision is final in all cases and no correspondence will be entered into.

Grants will not be awarded in the absence of submissions of sufficient merit.

The payment of a grant is subject, at all times, to BASES being satisfied that all these conditions are being complied with.

Successful grant applicants are expected to acknowledge fully, in writing, the nature of the BASES support in any publications, presentations or reports arising from the grant.

Grant recipients are strongly encouraged to present the outcomes of the funded work at the BASES Annual Conference.

Within 18 months of receiving the grant award letter, recipients of a grant shall submit:

• A full financial report on how the funds, including receipts, were used
• A c.1,500-word article - focus and format to be agreed with the Editor of The Sport and Exercise Scientist - for consideration in The Sport and Exercise Scientist. (Recipients of a grant are advised to read the ‘Guidelines for Contributors to The Sport and Exercise Scientist’.)

If a full financial report and a 1,500-word article for The Sport and Exercise Scientist are not received within the specified time period, the grant entitlements will be rescinded, and grant payments will have to be refunded to BASES in full.
