Information for Employers looking to post job vacancies

Increasingly, employers look for BASES Accreditation (or working towards this), as a way of ensuring quality assurance of their practitioners.

BASES Accreditation and its value and or importance within the professions of Sport and Exercise Science:

BASES Accreditation is a marker of professional standards for Sport and Exercise Scientists working in sports’ performance, clinical or research domains. For employers, it provides confidence that their employees are deemed to have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to practice safely, effectively and independently as a sport and exercise scientist. To become BASES Accredited, individuals must explicitly demonstrate that they have the required level of underpinning scientific knowledge, fully understand the delivery context and are able to apply their knowledge and skills to make a positive performance impact in their working environment.

Chartered Scientist and its value within the professions of Sport and Exercise Science:

Chartered Scientist represents a single chartered mark for all scientists, recognising high levels of professionalism and competence in science. BASES is a Licensed Member Body of the Science Council, enabling us to award Chartered Scientist status to members who meet the criteria. All BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientists are eligible to become Chartered Scientists, having demonstrated the required competencies through the BASES Accreditation application process.

The protected title of Sport and Exercise Psychologist:

The Health and Care Professions Council protects the public by regulating 15 health and care professions in the UK. Professions that are regulated have one or more designated titles that are protected by law, and professionals must be registered to use them. The titles of Practitioner Psychologist, and more specifically Sport and Exercise Psychologist are protected titles. Those who acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience required to be eligible to apply for registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist and Sport and Exercise Psychologist have gone through a rigorous training pathway and be considered safe to work with the public in their role.

In advertising Sport and / or Exercise Psychology roles, we ask employers to request that candidates are either Health and Care Professions Council registered as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist or are on the training pathways to becoming such. This may be through any of the Health and Care Professions Council registered pathways, including the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Sport and Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR), the British Psychological Society (BPS) Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology Stage 2, or any of the Professional Doctorate programmes that are accredited. Employers may also ask for British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences Accreditation or British Psychological Society Chartership, but these should not be considered as sufficient and the gold standard to the exclusion of Health and Care Professions Council registration.

BASES SEPAR:

The purpose of the BASES SEPAR is to ensure that candidates who complete a period of supervised practice and engage in continuous professional development acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience required to be eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist. Once registered with the HCPC, members are then able to use the protected title: Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

The overarching aim of the SEPAR is to ensure that practitioners can work autonomously and are industry ready in that they will be able to integrate effectively into a range of sport and/or exercise environments with a view to facilitate optimal involvement, performance, and/or enjoyment in sport and exercise as well as support the development of mental health and well-being in clients.

If students have completed SEPAR and are registered with the HCPC, employers, and the public, can be assured that students have undergone a rigorous qualification with professional development at its core.

Clinical Exercise Physiologist

Suitably qualified individuals can now apply, via an equivalence process, to become registered and will be conferred the title of ‘Clinical Exercise Physiologist’ following scrutiny. Professional registration ensures Clinical Exercise Physiologists are appropriately trained, meet the standards of proficiency, have indemnity insurance, are committed to continued professional development and are deemed ‘fit to practice’.

Professional registration represents a step-change in the provision of exercise prescription in clinical populations. Those registered will be qualified specialists, practicing in the prescription and delivery of evidence-based exercise interventions as part of the prevention, treatment and long-term management of acute, sub-acute, chronic and complex conditions, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare and rehabilitation providers across sectors and settings. Clinical Exercise Physiologist services will aim to optimise physical function and health and promote long-term wellness through lifestyle modification and behaviour change.

For more information visit the Clinical Exercise Physiology - UK website see:

www.clinicalexercisephysiology.org.uk

We would strongly encourage organisations delivering Clinical Exercise Physiology services to request their staff apply for the title of ‘Clinical Exercise Physiologist’. We hope in the future this will be required as part of staff recruitment criteria.
