BASES Medal of Achievement

BASES Medal of Achievement, recognising sustained and significant contributions of individuals to the sport and exercise sciences.

Established in 2024, the award of the BASES Medal of Achievement is reserved for those individuals making sustained and highly significant contributions to the sport and exercise sciences in the UK and beyond. The usual expectation might be that such individuals would have FBASES status for a minimum of 10 years prior to their nomination. However, it will also be possible for non-Fellows and non-BASES members to receive the BASES Medal if they meet the main criteria. Given the high level of achievement required for the award, no more than one to three such awards may be made annually.

The proposed criteria for award of the BASES Medal builds upon the requirements for FBASES status and borrows from the criteria applied by ACSM for its Citation Award. Unlike for the award of FBASES, individuals cannot nominate themselves for the BASES Medal of Achievement. Consideration of nominations is holistic and based on assessment of sustained, high-level contributions and achievements of the nominee.

The BASES Medal of Achievement will be awarded in a ‘special ceremony’ within the Gala Dinner of the BASES annual conference, with the recipient invited to give an address (five to ten minutes) which, for example, describes their career journey, offers advice to less experienced delegates and points to the future. The recipient will receive a BASES Medal alongside a framed certificate.

BASES Medal of Achievement

The BASES Medal is granted to an individual who has made sustained, significant and important contributions to the sport or exercise sciences in the UK and internationally. These contributions may include, but are not limited to, research and scholarship, applied and professional practice, education, and/or administrative services in the sport and exercise sciences. While BASES membership is not a requirement for this award, the normal expectation is that recipients will have been a BASES Fellow for a minimum of 10 years.

Nomination Process

The nominator must provide the following in the nomination materials:

1. Completion of the nomination form here, which also includes:
   1. A letter of nomination in which the nominator presents a compelling case. The letter should include pertinent information regarding the nominee’s contributions to the sport and exercise sciences, for example through research, education, applied practice and/or service to BASES, other professional organisations and the community.
   2. The letter of nomination should be endorsed, and counter-signed by up to three other individuals (such as BASES Fellows) who support the nomination.
