About

Sport and Exercise Science in the School of Life Sciences at Heriot-Watt is an exciting programme to be involved in, with two courses to choose from and new facilities to support your learning. The Scottish degree structure consists of a foundation year followed by three years of study equivalent to the typical three year degree in other parts of the UK. Direct entry to the second stage of the programme is possible for students with A levels including Biology. From the second stage of the programme, our courses (BSc Sport and Exercise Science, and BSc Sport and Exercise Science with Psychology) are structured to provide our students with an interesting balance of theory, practical, and applied aspects of sport and exercise science. We combine theory (lectures) with living anatomy, physiology, nutrition and metabolism practicals and learning reminders (tutorials) to ensure a varied and stimulating study experience. During laboratory practical sessions, our students gain an in-depth knowledge of how the body works at rest and at play, as well as the opportunity to satisfy their own curiosity by measuring physiological and exercise physiological variables on themselves. Sport and exercise psychology modules in the programme focus on the theory and practice of enhancing performance, psychological well-being, and health in sporting and general populations. The BSc Sport and Exercise Science with Psychology degree course provides an excellent opportunity to integrate mainstream psychology with study in sport and exercise science.

Since 1821, our pioneering research and education has made a positive impact on the global stage. We
continue to push new frontiers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Business and Design.
