Science Council 2022 CPD Awards – Jack Sharkey commendation
23rd November 2022
BASES member, Jack Sharkey, received a commendation award at the Science Council 2022 CPD Awards (CSci registration category) at a special evening in London on 21 November 2022. Jack, a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist and a member of the Integrity Advisory Group, was one of just nine awards made on the night, a great achievement as there were strong candidates nominated throughout all the science domains that have the Science Council license.
The evening began with the prestigious Sir Gareth Roberts lecture presented by Dame Ottoline Leyser, Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Cambridge and Chief Executive of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the organisation that distributes around £8 billion of government research funding. Dame Ottoline outlined that to fully capture the benefits of UK’s research excellence, R&I needed to transform from a model that often emphasises individual researchers working isolated from application, to one that emphasises collaboration, innovation, and networks. Her speech would be recognised by many in sport and exercise science where working together, and with application to real-world problems, is common. Jack Sharkey’s work, particularly with football, epitomises this approach. Professor Jonathan Doust FBASES, former chair of BASES and representing the Association on the night said “BASES is immensely proud of Jack and the recognition of his excellent work. He is the first BASES chartered scientist to receive an award by the Science Council.”
