BASES School Sport and Exercise Sciences Poster Competition 2023

Expression of Interest to become a BASES Outreach Hub

In September 2023, BASES will launch a poster competition aimed at engaging students aged between 14 and 18 years and studying GCSE, BTEC or A-Level subjects related to sport and exercise sciences. BASES is looking to recruit up to ten institutions around the UK that will act as outreach hubs (OH).

Each OH will recruit local schools (geographical area) to take part in one-day workshops at the OH. The workshop can be tailored to the expertise at the OH but will look to enrich the learning and understanding of GCSE, A-Level and BTEC students. The workshops will include interactive activities and will support the students to explore each topic so that they can go on to produce an informative poster on a topic related to their studies.

Following the OH visit, the students will continue to work on their information poster at school and will submit them to the OH by a given date. Based on guidance from the BASES Outreach Project Team, the OH will judge the posters from the schools to select a winning poster. Each OH winning poster is then submitted to the BASES Outreach Project Team who will judge the posters and select a national winner. The national winning school will win a prize that will include a visit from high profile athlete/coach and the winning poster will be presented at the BASES student conference.

BASES envisages that each OH can run this competition alongside their ongoing outreach provision. However, BASES will provide a total of £5,000 to support all OH’s deliver the project. This funding will be divided equally between all OH sites. The financial support can be used to fund the delivery of the project (e.g., pay for student ambassadors and consumables). Funding cannot be used to pay full-time members of staff to support delivery of the project.

What institution can be an OH?

  • Institutions with a BASES endorsed programme and/or laboratory.

  • Individuals who have BASES accreditation and/or are BASES Fellows but based at an institution without a BASES endorsed programme CAN also apply.

If you would like your institution to be an OH for this project, please complete the Expression of Interest form by 3 March 2023.

Please send the completed form to enquiries@bases.org.uk

To discuss the opportunity further, please contact the Chair of the BASES Outreach Project Team, Prof. John Dickinson FBASES (J.W.Dickinson@kent.ac.uk).
