New Education and Teaching Special Interest Group

Expressions of interest for involvement in a new Education and Teaching Special Interest Group (SIG) are sought from Association members. The overarching aim of the SIG will be to promote excellence in teaching and learning within and across our disciplines of sport and exercise science. Whether you practice across the wide spectrum of sport and exercise science programmes in HE and beyond, are educators outside of mainstream educational providers; are researchers; administrators; students and trainees in related medicine and the healthcare profession we are interested in your involvement.

The proposed purpose of this SIG will be to:

  • Set standards for excellence in teaching and learning in sport and exercise science education;
  • Promote the use of evidence-informed sport and exercise science education
  • Identify improvements in traditional approaches and support innovation in curriculum planning, teaching and learning, assessment and educational management
  • Recognise the global nature of teaching and learning in sport and exercise science education
  • Influence the continued development of sport and exercise science education through collaboration with relevant national, regional and international bodies
  • Recognise and utilise associated activity/research in related medicine and healthcare professions.

These will be achieved by:

  • Promoting the sharing of information through networking, conferences, publications and online activities
  • Sharing, supporting and fostering excellence for subject-level TEF for sport and exercise science
  • Developing teaching awards/grants that support excellence in teaching and learning in sport and exercise science education
  • Encouraging research in the field of sport and exercise science education.

A series of proposed activities have already been established by a small working group from across the Association. These include:

  • Identifying how much, as a sector, do we utilise and/or generate Teaching and Learning related research
  • Engaging with, and seeking the views of, Heads of Department at their forthcoming Forum in March 2019
  • Planning a series of Education and Teaching related articles that will feature within future editions of the Association's Sport and Exercise Scientist
  • Promoting the sharing of information through networking, conferences, publications and online activities
  • Considering applied and professional issues for practitioners from a Teaching and Learning perspective
  • Contributing to expert statements on themes aligned to Education and Teaching
  • Future developing the Sport and Exercise Accreditation (Pedagogy) Route as a means of promoting teaching excellence within and beyond the Association.

We are looking for members who are keen, committed and passionate about teaching and learning and willing to support the Association in establishing a group that champions teaching and learning excellence in Sport and Exercise Science.
