BASES Skill Acquisition Special Interest Group and the ESAN Conference

13th June 2023

The 10th Conference of the Expertise and Skill Acquisition Network (ESAN) took place on 17 – 18 May 2023 at the Institute of Sport, Manchester Metropolitan University.

The ESAN Conference topics cover skill acquisition, expertise, coaching and affiliated areas, such as talent identification and development. A key aim of ESAN is an exchange of information between researchers, coaches, and applied practitioners, and over 100 delegates from these groups attended. Keynote presentations were delivered by Prof. Nikki Hodges from University of Columbia and Dr. Philip Furley from German Sport University Cologne.

The conference was the first since the launch of the BASES Skill Acquisition Special Interest Group in 2023. Dr. Oliver Runswick from Kings College London, pictured, outlined the new Special Interest Group to the conference and its aim to increase the number of skill acquisition specialists working in sport. Following these presentations, an open discussion involving a panel of key stakeholders, pictured, was held about the position and future of skill acquisition in sport in the UK and beyond, as well as the Special Interest Group’s direction.

The 11th ESAN Conference will be held in May 2025. If you would like to be added to the Skill Acquisition Special Interest Group please email officemanager@bases.org.uk. Alternatively BASES members can opt in to communications from this Special Interest Group via their Member Profile (in the Members' Area) to receive updates and information on how to get more involved.
