We are a growing organisation, delivering well into the final year of our current 2021-2025 Strategy. We are currently finalising our new strategy from 2025-2028 and earlier this year, we were granted the Charter of Incorporation by His Majesty King Charles III in recognition of BASES’ quality and status as the pre-eminent body for the discipline of sport and exercise science in the UK. As part of the process of reincorporation, planned for April 2025, the name of the organisation will change to The Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) to reflect the new status of the organisation. Main purpose of job:
Responsible for the Association’s marketing and communication function, with support from a full-time Administrative Officer & MarComms Assistant. Development and implementation of all elements of marcomms strategy and planning that assists BASES in achieving its organisation objectives, including a successful transition to CASES.
Summary:
This exciting role is designed for a proactive, experienced and independent individual who would like to apply their marketing skills to a membership organisation, in a role which offers significant responsibility and autonomy within a small operations team. It would suit someone who combines creative flair with the analytical skills that underpin data-driven marketing and is able to effectively prioritise a diverse workload in line with organisation objectives.
You will have previously worked in a similar marketing or communications role. This does not need to have been in a member-focussed environment, but you should have an excellent understanding of the marketing tools and techniques that boost brand profile and drive growth of a membership, customer or donor base. Experience or knowledge of sport and exercise science is advantageous but not essential.
Job type:
Full-time (Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week), to start in December 2024. Willing to consider a part-time (0.8 role), for which the salary and benefits package will be pro-rata. BASES supports flexible working.
Salary: £34,733 to £37,403 (Grade 4), dependent upon experience.

Benefits package:
35 days paid holiday per year; Employer pension contribution of 6%; Gym membership allowance of £200.00 per annum; £50.00 annual contribution towards a sight test and cost of glasses if needed for VDU work.

Key duties and responsibilities include:
Develop and deliver marketing and communication strategies in relation to BASES’ events, services and additional revenue streams (including membership, sponsorship, conferences, workshops, webinars, publications and standards).
Act as the key contact for all marketing and communication enquiries.
Through appropriate strategies, increase membership recruitment and member retention.
Continue to evolve and develop the Membership offer to ensure benefits, products and services remain relevant and competitive at all times.
Oversee the organisation's communication channels (social media channels, community platforms, news items and mailouts) to build BASES’ awareness and reputation.
Extend and effectively promote the work of BASES to key commercial stakeholders and partners, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Promote and support BASES events including the Annual Conference.
Continue to evolve the Commercial Opportunities plan, liaising with marketing/advertising clients and partners to maintain relationships, develop marketing plans and increase advertising revenue.
Lead on the member survey every two years, preparing summaries and Infographics to be used by the Board.
Conduct market research to determine market requirements for future and existing projects.
Write creative briefs and, where necessary, work with suppliers to produce marketing materials (posters, leaflets, adverts etc.).
Identify and produce quality targeted marketing materials that are commercially driven and in accordance with BASES’ standards and guidelines.
Develop BASES’ current and prospective membership and commercial stakeholders’ database to deliver marketing campaigns and analysis, ensuring content is targeted to particular customer segments and response rate is maximised.
Oversee BASES’ brand guidelines and integrity on all communications and imagery.
- Support key Standing Committees and Advisory Groups, including Division Committees, Membership Reps, Network Reps and the Student Advisory Group, to help increase the membership offering and reach strategic objectives.
- Network and engage with other Associations and partners to help benchmark / provide competitor analysis.
Produce regular reports for the Chief Executive Officer.
Act as the lead contact for any future developments to the CRM or website.
Undertake any other reasonable instruction as requested by the Chief Executive Officer.
Essential and desirable candidate Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Capabilities:
Essential
- Prior experience in a relevant marketing & communications role
- A track record of planning, managing and implementing effective marketing and communication strategies to build an organisation’s profile and attract and retain customers, donors or members
- Some exposure to working with CRM systems, including reporting and analytics
- Experience of website development and management
- Experience of producing member, customer, donor or beneficiary-focused communications e.g., newsletters, website content
- Experience of working on organisation social media accounts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Reliable and dependable individual who can work independently and as a vital part of a small team
- Experience of working with a variety of partners and stakeholders to build and maintain relationships.
Desirable
- Experience of working in a member-focussed environment
- A professional or academic qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Marketing, Media, Communications or Journalism)
- Experience of successfully driving membership growth (highly desirable)
