Contract Type: Full time

As part of a very exciting programme of growth, we have a unique opportunity to recruit a number of highly motivated Lecturers or Senior Lecturers to join the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University in Spring 2020. Positions are available across a range of related disciplines for sports, exercise and health sciences. We are particularly interested in those with a strong research track record in human cardiovascular physiology, musculoskeletal physiology, endocrine and metabolism, exercise nutrition, biomechanics, motor control, strength and conditioning, sport/health psychology, coaching and health or physical activity epidemiology.

Sport and Exercise Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University is now located within The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the All Saints campus in central Manchester. We benefit from close links with elite sports and health organisations that enhance teaching and help to deliver relevant, impactful research. One of the largest research-led science and technology educators in the UK, our Faculty of Science and Engineering offers a world-class teaching environment, covering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

With a range of specialisms and global impact, our exceptional research has created an international reputation for making transformative contributions to the world around us. We deliver work with real-world impact, and cultivate lasting relationships with businesses, the government and the general public to share our innovation and expertise.

We were among the first in the UK to offer Sport and Exercise Science degrees. Our trailblazing innovations around learning, teaching and research have kept us consistently amongst the best performing nationally and internationally for over three decades, which is reflected by our current standing within the top 5 in The Guardian’s 2020 UK University League Tables for Sport Sciences. Our refreshed undergraduate curriculum emphasises quality research-informed teaching.

Combined with flagship new research facilities under development, our environment is designed to support the most talented and ambitious academics working in sport, exercise and health sciences. The facilities include advanced clinical imaging with magnetic resonance, DXA, pQCT and ultrasound, an environmental chamber to simulate altitude and hot/cold conditions, an instrumented treadmill and staircases with motion capture capabilities, human performance labs with ECG, EMG, EEG, eye tracking and TMS, cell metabolism and biochemistry laboratories, as well as a sports performance centre with dedicated laboratories and a strength and conditioning gym.

Applicants must be highly motivated and possess excellent communication skills to deliver high quality research-informed teaching and excellent student experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are looking for academics with a relevant PhD, some experience of teaching in Higher Education and an established research track record including publications in high ranking, relevant science or medical journals. Postdoctoral research experience and ongoing national or international collaborations with reputable research groups would be a distinct advantage.
Applicants must submit a CV and a short cover letter outlining their specialist research/teaching area (e.g. sports or health physiology, psychology, biomechanics, coaching etc) as well as a credible 3 – 5 year plan for establishing independent, sustainable research aligned to current Research Centre themes. These themes include Movement Impairment, Health and Ageing, and Sports Medicine and Elite Performance.

There will be successive recruitment drives for these roles. The first in Nov/Dec, the second in January.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop their own programme of research and will be fully supported to do so within the Musculoskeletal Science and Sports Medicine Research Centre or other relevant Research Centre, as appropriate.
