About the facility
The School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed individual to a new full-time permanent Lectureship in Biomechanics. The School is within the Faculty of Science and Health and holds strong teaching, research and innovation links with many areas of the Faculty. The School performed well in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) and is hopeful of continued success in the forthcoming REF2021, ranks amongst the leading Sport and Exercise Science providers in the UK, and has consistently boasted excellent student satisfaction. At an institutional level, Portsmouth was rated Gold in the UK Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and ranked in the top 20 UK universities for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS). The Economist also rates the University of Portsmouth as number one in the UK for boosting graduate salaries, with 97.5 per cent of graduates working, or in further study six months after they graduated.
The successful candidate will make a significant teaching contribution to the School and contribute to our existing, and emerging, multidisciplinary school-wide themes: Extreme Environments; Individual, Occupational and Organisational Performance; and, Physical Activity, Health, and Rehabilitation. The appointee will engage in the full range of academic duties associated with a Lectureship. These include: the capability to deliver and develop our curriculum pathways in accordance with the School vision and broader University strategy; the ability to assist research of a standard that is REF returnable via collaboration within and outside the University; capability for future grant capture and income generation; and, teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students (e.g., MSc, MRes, MPhil, PhD).
In addition to holding a PhD (or equivalent) and having published in relevant peer-review journals, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are able to evidence an ability to support our current teaching and research activities across the biomechanics curriculum.
You will need to be able to demonstrate a strong theoretical knowledge base across the broad biomechanics field and practical competence using a variety of laboratory equipment (e.g. motion capture, force plates, EMG, IKD) and associated data analysis techniques. The practical skills and techniques that you bring should complement our existing thematic research areas through your own specialist knowledge. Previous teaching experience at an undergraduate level is essential and the successful candidate will have a strong team-focused ethos.
Information on the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science
The University of Portsmouth has delivered sport, health and exercise-related programmes for 25 years. With several recent appointments, the school comprises ~35 academic staff, ~850 Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught students, and ~30 postgraduate research students. Recent investments have supported our student learning experiences (resulting in outstanding graduate-level first destination career statistics), our research environment, and planned physical and estate developments to extend beyond the current accommodation within the Spinnaker Building; this has already resulted in the acquisition of new estate space for the provision of Strength, Conditioning and Rehabilitation related activities. The school enjoys a supportive environment for the development of excellence in its staff and students, and holds an Athena SWAN bronze award, in addition to adhering to the Stonewall charter across the University.
