BASES ANNUAL STUDENT CONFERENCE - LATEST NEWS
Keep Tuesday 22nd May to Wednesday 23rd May 2007 free…

Chichester is proud to host the 2007 BASES Annual Student Conference having held the first BASES (then BASS) conference in 1985. An exciting programme is planned with the opening keynote being delivered by Emeritus Professor Tudor Hale entitled ‘What is this thing called Sport and Exercise Science?’ Emeritus Professor Tudor Hale was a former Chair of BASES, the National Coaching Foundation Committee and the National Coaching Foundation Research Committee. He was the Project Director of Sports Science Support Programmes in Boxing, Cycling and Sailing, is a BASES Fellow and is the author of the Wiley Textbook ‘Exercise Physiology: A Thematic Approach’.

What will follow is two days of oral and poster presentations, parallel symposia and parallel workshops covering the main Divisions of Sport and Performance and Physical Activity for Health and highlighting the advances sport and exercise sciences has made over the last two decades. Intertwined with the main scientific programme will be dedicated sessions on careers, Supervised Experience and Accreditation, with speakers recounting their own experiences in the world of work and providing excellent advice on how to get where you want to be. The social programme will include an informal ‘meet the sport and exercise scientists and BASES team’ reception, where all the key speakers and officers of BASES will be circulating to either answer your questions or just to have a chat. Following this there will be a conference dinner and a live band.

The final highlight will be a keynote by Dr Louis Passfield. Throughout his career Louis has worked with British Cycling and assisted the riders and coaches with their preparation for major championships. In this role he has attended several major championships including Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships. Currently, he is still involved with British Cycling conducting research into the benefits of altitude training for elite cyclists.

The Conference will be held at our Bishop Otter Campus in the historic Roman city of Chichester, which has a real mix of traditional and contemporary pubs and bars. The campus is well located on the south coast and is easily accessible by road, rail and air (both Southampton and Gatwick offer low cost flights).

Who should attend?

The Conference is aimed at anyone with an interest is sport and exercise sciences and is targeted at postgraduate, third year and second year students. It provides a forum for students to present their own research, find out about other areas of research, learn about current issues in sport and exercise sciences, take part in interactive workshops and become part of the sport and exercise sciences network in the UK.

The Conference provides opportunities to:

  • Present research (oral and poster presentations)
  • Get ideas for your own research
  • Share knowledge and good practice
  • Listen to keynote presentations from leaders in the field
  • Speak with experts in the field
  • Meet new people
  • Socialise
  • Win student awards.

Exhibitors

This year the conference will offer exhibition space for business and Universities wishing to advertise their postgraduate courses. BASES Conferences attract practitioners, researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, amongst others. The Conference will be a prime opportunity to target sport and exercise science students with a developing interest in the profession. The trade fair will be held on Wednesday 23 May only. Exhibitor space is offered at a cost of £50 while we will also be offering HE Institutions the opportunity of a postgraduate recruitment stand. The cost for this will be £25 for 'BASES Course Finder' listed HE Institutions and £50 for 'Non-BASES Course Finder' listed HE Institutions.

We hope you will join us for this important event. The programme will be an exciting one and it will be an opportunity that every student with an interest in sport and exercise science should take advantage of.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Dr Mike Lauder, Conference Organiser
