Inaugural Meeting of the Council
The new BASES Council is now in place
In October 2004 BASES held its first ever Extraordinary General
Meeting (EGM) and it was unanimously voted to accept the proposal
submitted by the Executive Committee to restructure the management
of BASES by establishing two groups, a Strategic Management Team
(SMT) and a Council, to replace the existing Executive Committee.
The streamlined strategically focused SMT took office straight away
and comprises the Executive Officer, Chair, Secretary and Treasurer
(and Chair Elect when in post). The role of the SMT involves strategic
management, representing the interests of BASES, decision-making,
etc.
The role of the Council is to provide assistance to the SMT in
line with the Association's mission and corporate plan. It has taken
slightly longer than the SMT to get up and running. This has been
mainly due to the fact that despite several approaches and an open
invite to apply, the SMT has been unable to appoint an appropriate
President to head up the Council. At a recent SMT meeting it was
decided that as an interim measure it made sense for the outgoing
Chair, Prof Craig Mahoney to take the helm. Already in place were
the Chairs of the three Divisions and the Chair of the Student Advisory
Group. Following an open recruitment process to individuals were
co-opted into the Council. Gaynor Heys works in the sports retail
and manufacturing industry and brings to the Council considerable
management skills. Will Calvert is the Head of Finance at UK Sport
and has considerable experience as a finance director and general
manager. Matters discussed at the meeting included the role of the
Council, a membership recruitment drive and marketing and communications.
Members
of the Council are as follows:
- Prof Craig Mahoney, Acting President
- Dr Claire Hitchings (nee Palmer), BASES Executive Officer
- Dr Rhys Thatcher, Division of Education and Professional Development,
Chair
- Dr John Buckley, Division of Physical Activity for Health, Chair
- Prof Kevin Thompson, Division of Sport and Performance, Chair
- Tamsin Frost, Student Advisory Group, Chair
