BPS Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology Update

New training routes…

The training routes to becoming a BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist are currently being developed through the activities of the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology (DSEP). As with all areas of psychology, a pre-requisite to embarking on the training route is to achieve Graduate Basis for Registration through a recognised degree, conversion course or by taking the qualifying exam. Following that, in Stage 1 of the training route candidates should undertake a BPS accredited MSc in the area of Sport Psychology, Exercise Psychology or Sport and Exercise Psychology. Recently, a number of MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology courses have been accredited by the DSEP Training Committee (DSEPTC). Additionally, candidates with GBR who successfully complete a postgraduate qualification in sport and exercise psychology between 1st September 2004 and the 30th September 2008 may apply on an individual basis to have this training course approved by the Admissions Committee.

Stage 2 of the training route requires at least 2 year’s full-time supervised experience (or equivalent) to obtain the requisite key competencies of a chartered sport and exercise psychologist. Full guidelines on this process and a Candidate’s Handbook are currently being finalized by the DSEPTC. Following approval by the BPS Membership and Professional Training Board these guidelines will be published by the BPS Qualifications Office. It is anticipated that these will be available for potential stage 2 applications in 2008.

Save the Date for DSEP Inaugural Conference

DSEP will hold its first conference at the BPS Offices in London on December 11 and 12 2008. Further details and speakers will be confirmed in due course.
