Editor Prof Andy Lane provides a foreword
The summer months for BASES members can be a mixed affair. Balancing
holidays with preparation for the BASES Annual Conference can go
hand in hand. The Conference, organised by Dr Keith Stokes's team
at the University of Bath, is the culmination of nearly two year's
planning. On the theme of preparation, please get the student and
annual conferences in your plans for next year. In this issue, we
feature some of the applied papers from the Conference. Our feature
presents an article by Dr Joanna Scurr, a winner of a BASES Interantional
Travel Grant Award, funding made available from the success of previous
Annual Conferences. Her research on the effects of exercise on the
breasts addresses a relevant issue and is receiving considerable
publicity.
Chris Wagg presents an information article on learning style and
invites students to assess their learning style through an on-line
weblink. Dr Paul Smith offers insights into handcycling, indicating
opportunities for BASES members for involvement. Dr Lee Ingle explains
the importance of exercise testing in patients with chronic heart
failure. Prof Greg Atkinson and Drs Alan Batterham and Barry Drust
provide their thoughts on the guidelines for implementing and reporting
randomised controlled trials have been laid down in the Consolidated
Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement.
Promoting the good work of BASES is important. With this in mind,
please can I remind members that The Sport and Exercise Scientist
is freely available online via the BASES website and to forward
this link to relevant parties. I hope you enjoy this issue.
