Accreditation
Individual Accreditation

BASES is concerned with setting, maintaining and enhancing the professional and ethical standards of its members who are actively involved in sport and exercise science.

High standards are promoted in two particular ways:

1.      Through the adoption of a strict .pdf documentBASES Code of Conduct to which all members must adhere. Violation of this code of conduct can result in sanctions, including removal of accreditation. The code of conduct serves to ensure a minimum level of service to individuals or groups who make use of the range of services offered by sport and exercise scientists.

2.      Through a system of BASES Accreditation, which serves as a quality assurance mechanism. Accreditation helps to ensure that the level of service received by a particular client is based on the best available knowledge and practice.

In order to achieve BASES Accreditation, a member must demonstrate (by formal application within a peer-review process) his or her competence to provide an appropriate level of service to client groups.

BASES Supervised Experience (SE) aims to provide sport and exercise scientists with the guidance, environment and opportunities that will facilitate the development of the competencies expected for BASES Accreditation for scientific support and/or research.

There are two categories of accreditation:

1.      Scientific support
2.      Research.

There are four disciplines:

1.      Biomechanics
2.      Physiology
3.      Psychology
4.      Interdisciplinary.

All accredited individuals and those undergoing supervised experience towards accreditation are expected to work only within their areas of competence. Thus, the system provides potential clients from sport and exercise groups with the means to ensure that the services they receive will be both safe and effective as possible.

Overseas Accreditation Transfer
BASES welcomes the opportunity to work with overseas Sport and Exercise Professionals. The term "accredited" can mean different things in different countries, and similar terms such as endorsed or certificated can also apply. In the UK, BASES accredited status is aligned with a level equivalent to at least a Masters degree plus applied experience. We would welcome an application from you to attain BASES accredited status but in order to ensure the high standards we do require you to submit evidence of your qualifications and experience.

- Documentation detailing current valid accreditation status with another professional sport and exercise science organisation.
- Your current accreditation must be valid on receipt of your application
- Copies of a relevant undergraduate degree and any post graduate qualifications
- Copy of your passport
- Curriculum Vitae
- A portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the work you have been doing as a professional sport and exercise scientist. This might include copies of academic publications, articles in sporting/exercise magazines, strategy documents, training plans, exercise interventions, press reports etc.
- Two professional references - please use template click here
- A non-refundable administration cost of £75

Your application will be considered by the Chair and the Executive Officer of BASES rather than through our normal accreditation committee process. This will help us give you a rapid reply in case your time in the UK is relatively short.

Should your transfer application be successful, you will be awarded BASES accreditation in your qualified discipline for two years. At the end of this two year period, you will be subject to re-accreditation and follow the same process as all BASES accredited members. Accreditation status is subject to you being a Professional member of BASES. Membership can be processed on acknowledgement of a successful transfer request.
If your transfer application is unsuccessful, BASES will provide feedback. We would be happy to consider a new application in the future.

Should BASES amend their accreditation process at any time, we will inform you in writing. You will be subject to the same procedure as all other members.

BASES reserves the right to amend or withdraw this process at any time.
