Overview:

Dr Costas Karageorghis will introduce key concepts and outline some of the seminal findings that have emanated from this area of research. Subsequently, delegates will engage in a range of interesting and thought-provoking exercises that address the application of music in both sport and exercise settings. Dr Daniel Bishop will present idiographic and nomothetic research to support the use of music to manipulate emotional state prior to and during athletic performance. Two illustrative mini-experiments involving all delegates will also be conducted.

Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:

This workshop aims to assist delegates to:

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the constituents of music
  • Describe the psychological, psychophysical, psychophysiological and ergogenic effects of music in sport and exercise settings
  • Present and discuss the conceptual/theoretical models that have been advanced to explain the effects of music in the domain of sport and exercise
  • Apply an objective method for the selection of music that is appropriate for a variety of sport and exercise contexts
  • Design some elementary music-related interventions for athletes and exercise participants
  • Be able to use theory to inform effective music prescription practice

Presenter(s):

Dr Costas Karageorghis is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist  (Psychology - Research and Scientiific Support) and a BPS Chartered Psychologist. He is Deputy Head of School (Research) in the School of Sport and Education at Brunel University and has a strong academic background in sport and music supplemented by applied experiences in both fields. Costas is a leading authority on the psychophysical and ergogenic effects of music and has presented his research all over the world.  In 2008 he launched the Run to the Beat half-marathon series in collaboration with IMG/Sony Ericsson.

Dr Daniel Bishop is a BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist, a Founding Member of the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology and a Professional member of BASES. He lectures at Brunel University in Sport Psychology and Research Methods. Daniel completed his PhD in the area of sport and music, publishing a number of high-impact papers and a book chapter in the process and is also the resident psychologist at the Sutton Tennis Academy in southwest London, an LTA High Performance Centre.
