Overview:

This workshop is designed for strength & conditioning specialists, biomechanists, sports rehabilitators and physiotherapists who want to gain a practical understanding of assessing strength and power in athletes. The workshop will focus on the use of force platforms, displacement transducers and isokinetic dynamometers to assess maximal strength and power across the force-velocity spectrum. Consideration will also be given to assessing bilateral asymmetry and it’s implications on performance and injury risk. You will be encouraged to participate in cross-discipline discussions and to reflect on the extent to which you could apply biomechanical principles and techniques in your roles.

Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:

  • explain the fundamental principles behind force platforms, displacement transducers and isokinetic dynamometers.
  • understand the limitations of certain devices for assessing performance in specific lifts/exercises.
  • devise valid protocols to assess strength and power related variables across the force-velocity spectrum.
  • devise protocols to assess bilateral asymmetry in open and closed kinetic chain tests.
  • interpret biomechanical data and implement findings into training interventions  .

Presenter(s):

Dr Phil Graham-Smith is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist (Biomechanics - Scientific Support), a Senior Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics at the University of Salford and Head of Biomechanics at the English Institute of Sport. He is a British Ollympic Assocation registered Performance Analyst and a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Phil  has over 17 years applied experience providing biomechanical assessments for UK Athletics and professional football clubs.

Paul Jones is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist (Interdisciplinary - Scientific Support) and a Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics and Strength & Conditioning at the University of Salford. A Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Paul has 8 years applied experience providing biomechanical support to UK Athletics Disability Squad.
