Physiological Monitoring Tools for Multi-Sprint Sports
Date: Friday 23 March 2012 (booking deadline: 9 March)
Time: 10am - 4pm
Venue: University of Dundee
Cost: £100 (or £75 for BASES, ACPSM, BPS and BASEM members)
Who should attend?
Students and/or sports scientists wishing to increase their knowledge and practical skills in the planning and execution of field-based monitoring tools for multi-sprint sports. This workshop would be particularly suited to (and will be pitched at a level appropriate to) individuals on the BASES Supervised Experience Pathway Programme.
Overview:
This workshop will allow developing sports scientists an opportunity to increase their knowledge and practical skills in the planning and execution of field-based monitoring for multi-sprint sports. The workshop will cover the process of needs analysis, intervention and evaluation in the use of monitoring tools. It will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the equipment and protocols used in some of the more commonly used field based monitoring tools for multi-sprint sports.
Please note: All delegates are asked to bring practical clothing to allow them to participate appropriately in the afternoon’s practical testing session. Part of the practical will be outside so it would be advisable to also come prepared for the possibility of wet weather.
Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:
On completion of this workshop, delegates should be able to;
- Describe what field based monitoring is and why and when it may be useful.
- Based on a needs analysis, demonstrate the ability to design an appropriate field based monitoring protocol for a multi-sprint sport.
- Demonstrate an awareness of a variety of monitoring tools that can be used to support performance.
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake field based monitoring in a practical setting (using heart rate and GPS monitors as an example).
- Describe how to analyse test data and feedback the results in an appropriate manner to a client.
- Detail the importance of reflective evaluation.
Comments from Previous Delegates:
- A previous BASES workshop (Field Based Fitness Testing for Multi-Sprint Sports) ran by these presenters received an excellent mean delegate rating of 9/10.
- This new workshop is designed to complement this previous workshop (and was designed based on delegate interest).
Presenters:
Dr Audrey Duncan (Sports Science Manager) and Helen Weavers (Sport and Exercise Physiologist) run the sports science consultancy service within the BASES accredited Performance Assessment Unit in the ISE, University of Dundee. They are both BASES accredited Sport and Exercise Scientists and have been involved in the provision of sports science support to multi-sprint sports (including rugby, hockey, ice-hockey and football) for over 10 years. They have a particular expertise in the delivery of sports science support (including testing, monitoring, education and strength and conditioning work) to football and work with players from across the performance continuum (under 11 age groups through to Scottish Premier League professional players).
Audrey and Helen also both co-ordinate and deliver modules within the area of “Sport and Exercise Training Science” on the undergraduate Sports Biomedicine Degree programme at The University of Dundee.
