Overview:

It is estimated that osteoporosis will affect one out of every two women and one out of every five men aged 50, causing pain, disability and increased mortality. This workshop will provide background on bone health and osteoporosis prevention accompanied by demonstrations of methods for assessing bone health. Research on physical activity and bone health will be reviewed to consider the optimum prescription of exercise, how this differs across the lifespan and interacts with nutrient and hormone status to influence bone health.

Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:

  • Define osteoporosis and describe its risk factors
  • Describe how bone health and osteoporosis risk may be assessed.
  • Summarise the role of exercise on bone health, fall and fracture risk.
  • Identify exercise prescriptions that may be appropriate for optimising bone health.
  • Describe how the exercise prescription for bone health may differ between different populations.
  • Identify factors that may alter the effectiveness of exercise on bone.

Presenter(s):

Dr Katherine Brooke-Wavell is a Senior Lecturer in Human Biology at Loughborough University. She has conducted and supervised a number of studies examining the effects of exercise interventions on bone health in different age groups and has published a number of research papers as well as invited reviews and presentations for health presentations.
