Who Should Attend?

This workshop would be particulary suitable for those individuals new to teaching or lecturing at Universities. It will be particulary useful for those delegates wishing to understand the process of and administration of teacing Sport and Exercise Scinece or related courses at University level and aspects of career development.

Overview:

A practical and theoretical workshop, providing an overview of teaching sport and exercise science at University level. Practical examples will include assessment moderation, development of problem-based learning and professional development relating to typical sport and exercise science modules. Although specific practices and regulations differ between Universities, the workshop aims to provide a general overview of lecturing roles within University education. Ideal for those new to, or considering, working in Higher Education.

Learning Outcomes of the workshop:

This workshop aims to:

  • Describe the general role of lectures / senior lecturers and career progression
  • To identify the role of module leaders, module evaluation and module reporting
  • To identify key aspects of assessment development, marking and moderation
  • To identify a range of key teaching and learning tools available
  • To identify the role of the academics in student support
  • Share good practice regarding teaching and learning in Sport and Exercise Science

Presenter(s):            

Dr Mike Price is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist(Physiology - Research) and Course Director for undergraduate and postgraduate Sport and Exercise Science at Coventry University. He is experienced in the development and delivery of Sport and Exercise Science courses and is currently an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the area.

Mike Smith is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist (Psychology - Scientific Support) and teaches Sport and Exercise Psychology along with Work Experience. He has been successfully using PBL for the last 3 years in all levels of the Sport and Exercise Psychology modules

Kathryn Cook is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientists (Psychology - Scientific Support) who teaches Sport and Exercise Psychology and Coaching and is the first year tutor at Coventry /University. She has used PBL in Undergraduate Sport and Exercise Psychology modules for the last three years.

Dr Val Cox is the Head of Department for Biomolecular and Sport Sciences at Coventry University. She has a wide range of experiences dealing with both staff and students and their requirements. She also utilises PBL in teaching methods.
