Overview:
|
This workshop outlines the underlining theory behind the Critical Power concept and reviews its applicability in the field.
1. Experts from academia will bring together the past and latest related-research findings.
2. Experts in training and coaching will share some case studies of successful application of Critical Power in the field.
Laboratory practicals will bring the concept into life, giving you all the skills you need to become an expert in the critical power concept.
|
|
Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:
|
This workshop aims to assist delegates to:
- demonstrate a sound knowledge of the scientific literature on critical power;
- be able to design a protocol for assessing an individual’s critical power (ergometry), or critical velocity (treadmill, swimming), and to critically evaluate validity, accuracy and reliability of the methodology;
- be able to discuss the limitations and delimitations associated with the application of the concept to the field;
- be able to use a critical power / velocity value in coaching practice.

Presenter(s):
|
Dr Helen Carter has specialised in research of endurance performance, in particular, laboratory assessment of endurance fitness and the physiology of training since 1998. She has presented her work to audiences across the world. Helen has published over 30 papers in the scientific literature and currently reviews of 7 international science journals. As well as her part time role as a research fellow at Brighton, Helen is also running her own sport science and coaching company, "PBscience”
Dr Jeanne Dekerle has been working on the Critical Power concept for the past 10 years, with a particular focus on its applicability into the field (swimming). Currently a Lecturer in Sports and Exercise Physiology at the University of Brighton, Jeanne is also part-time head coach of a local Swimming Club, with over 40 swimmers under her direct coaching responsibility. Jeanne tests the critical velocity concept in her daily coaching duties, while carrying out some research projects at the university (cycling ergometry). Jeanne is regularly invited to present the Critical Power concept to international scientific and coaching conferences.
