Overview

Shulman (2005) identifies the concept of ‘signature pedagogies’, which indicate practices that are ‘pervasive, routine and habitual in their distinct subject area’.  In order to enhance teaching we need to apply generic literature on student learning in higher education to the distinctive aspects of sport and exercise science.  The workshop will combine the delivery of theory, research and local projects to identify some of the challenges associated with learning and teaching within this area.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will be able to:

  • Use theoretical models of learning and teaching in higher education to guide thinking about teaching sport and exercise science.
  • Identify particular topics within sport and exercise sciences that bring challenges for both students’ learning and teaching.
  • Explain the role of motivational variables in determining the experience of sport and exercise science students.
  • Discuss the opportunities and challenges of laboratory based activities for teaching sport and exercise science.
  • Discuss student attributes in sport and exercise science and identify principles of effective assessment and feedback.
