Programme Design and Periodisation : a critical review and real world application

Overview:                                                            

This session will review and critique the current guidelines for programme design and planning, including a review of periodisation. A number of delegates will then be invited to present a summary of one of their periodised programmes (PowerPoint – 15 mins maximum), identifying specific questions that they would like answered. We will have a series of team and individual programmes available for evaluation to start off the process.

Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:

    To be able to:
  • demonstrate a sound knowledge of the theoretical concepts of periodisation and programme design
  • critically evaluate the current guidelines for the development of strength and power
  • be able to critically evaluate and reflect upon periodised training programmes and their effectiveness

Presenter(s):

Paul Comfort is currently the programme leader for the MSc Strength and Conditioning at the University of Salford. He is also the Head of Sport Science Support for Salford City Reds Rugby League Club and the Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach for England Men’s Lacrosse. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and is also accredited with the UKSCA. Paul is well published in the area of S&C and is the Editor of a book entitled Sports Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention.

Dr Phil Graham-Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics at the University of Salford and Head of Biomechanics at the English Institute of Sport. He is a BASES Accredited Sports and Exercise Scientist (Biomechanics - Scientific Support), BOA registered Performance Analyst and a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. He has over 17 years applied experience providing biomechanical assessments for UK Athletics and professional football clubs.

Paul Jones is a Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics and Strength & Conditioning at the University of Salford. He is a BASES Accredited Sport and Execise Scientist (Interdisciplinary)  and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Paul has 8 years applied experience providing biomechanical support to UK Athletics Disability Squad.
