Oxygen Uptake Kinetics: measurement and application in sport and disease
Date and time: Wednesday 9 May 2012, 9.30am - 4.15pm
Venue: Liverpool Hope University
Cost: £100 or £75 BASES, BASEM, BPS and ACPSM members
Level of Delegate Interaction:
In the afternoon session, delegates will collect and analyse data during a period of practical work (see workshop programme)
Who Should Attend:
Students, practitioners and physiologists working with clinical groups or athletes where the impact of interventions on oxidative metabolism, exercise tolerance and quality of life requires assessment.
Overview:
Pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics during exercise represents a conflation of the mechanisms by which oxygen is delivered and utilised by the exercising muscle. It is therefore an excellent means by which to test the impact of interventions designed to relieve a limitation to oxidative metabolism at one of these sites in both healthy and diseased populations. This workshop is therefore designed to de-mystify the field of oxygen uptake kinetics and provide hands-on experience of their measurement and analysis.
Learning Outcomes of the Workshop:
- By the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to:
- Describe the impact of an acute or chronic intervention (e.g. exercise, dietary) on exercise tolerance and oxidative metabolism
- Undertake constant load exercise testing and identify issues related to “unloaded” exercise and exercise amplitude
- Describe the parameters necessary for input into relevant software to instigate the modelling (measurement) process
- Identify the different phases of the oxygen uptake kinetic response to exercise with reference to the output from the modelling (measurement) procedure
