Full Description:
The University of Bedfordshire Faculty of Education, Sport and Tourism Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences Head of Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences Ref: ACEC3725 Competitive spot salary in the region of £60,000 Leadership opportunity for ambitious academic with international research profile The Faculty of Education, Sport and Tourism has undergone significant recent expansion and now has 4,000 students and over 100 academic staff in five departments providing over 50 undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses in Education, Sport and Tourism.
The Faculty has a dynamic approach to developing partnerships with employers, and provides a highly collegiate working environment for staff and students. The University has a diverse student body and growing international recruitment. Following a major strategic review and reorganisation in 2008/09 the Faculty is continuing to invest in areas of growth and is now seeking to recruit an ambitious staff member with an active interest in teaching, research and enterprise. An academic presence in the area of physical activity including physical education and dance and related disciplines has existed in Bedford for over 120 years (1882).
As part of that tradition and the academic vision required for long-term development, the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SES) was created in 2009 following the restructuring of the School of Sport and PE. In recent years, there has been a major move into the STEM areas (physiology, biochemistry, genetics) as identified by the report into the discipline from the 2008 RAE. This has been recognised at UoB and all of the recent appointees have been in the STEM areas. We are fortunate to have a recent, £8 million exercise science laboratory and sport facilities development within which our research happens. All of the Departmental research activity occurs under the umbrella of the cross-Faculty Research Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR). The research groups within ISPAR are Muscle Cellular and Molecular Physiology (MCMP), Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology (ASEP) and Physical Activity and Health (PAH). For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Marilyn Leask, Dean of Education, Sport and Tourism via Sarah Blomfield PA to the Dean via email: sarah.blomfield@beds.ac.uk or tel: 01234 793428.
