Function of the Post:
To develop and lead a strong research / commercial portfolio in Sport and Exercise Sciences and provide robust, effective, collaborative research leadership across the broader area of Sport in accordance with the University’s terms and conditions for Professor, Reader and Teaching Fellow.
Principal Accountabilities:
Research • Lead, develop and mentor academic and research staff within the department and relevant parts of the faculty in the development of their own research profiles • Develop, in collaboration with the Head of Department and the Sport Research Area Coordinator, a coherent, feasible and ambitious research strategy and ambitious plan for implementing the University’s research and scholarship strategy in this area • Prepare and present, in collaboration with the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Head of the Research and Employer Engagement Office, Head of Department and Sport Research Area Coordinator, the Sports Science submission to the next Research Excellence Framework. • Meeting ambitious targets for external income to support and develop research activity and support others who seek to attract funding • Maintain a personal research profile (Internationally excellent/World leading) within the context of Sport and Exercise Sciences’ research programme and strategy. • Develop a nationally (or internationally) recognised research centre for sport and exercise sciences • Manage and lead research projects within the department and develop research networks internally and externally, taking a lead in establishing collaborative links with other Universities • Develop appropriate collaborative cross-department research activity within the Faculty and contribute to the research culture of the University • Attract and supervise postgraduate research students and research active staff registered with the University of Southampton accredited institute scheme, securing associated external funding Learning and Teaching • Lead on research- engaged teaching within appropriate areas of expertise • Contribute to the implementation of the learning and teaching strategies within the Department and across the University • Support academic staff to improve practice in learning and teaching and in developing research-engaged teaching. Income Generation, External Engagement and Knowledge Exchange • Attract external funding from various sources, including applied and policy, as well as council-funded research where appropriate, consultancy, and knowledge transfer to enable income diversification and enhance academic reputation • Engage with external employers and stakeholders to foster relationships and improve the student experience • Represent the research activity of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences on external bodies and networks at a national and international level such that the interests and strategies of the University are advanced • Lead on and support staff on knowledge exchange and knowledge transfer partnerships • Contribute to the University and Department Vision of being recognized internationally, significant nationally, important regionally and vital locally. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Research and Employer Engagement Office (REEO) to facilitate a range of income generation activities. Academic Leadership • Support the Head of Department in its management and direction, as appropriate and agreed with the Head. • Support the Sport Research Area Coordinator’s function of management and administration of post-graduate admission and progress from registration to completion, and generation of the research environment statement • Contribute to the direction of the Faculty, as appropriate and agreed with the Executive Dean • Contribute to and support the University’s strategic plan and Research and Scholarship Strategy
