The Board

Prof Jo Doust, FBASES - Chair

Jo has a BSc (Human Biology) from Loughborough and a PhD from Nottingham Medical School . In 2000 he was made a Fellow of BASES. He has published more than 40 academic papers associated with his research which mainly rests in topics associated with the physiology of sustainable exercise and markers of exercise intensity . He has worked with many sports people applying sports science to performance including Olympic and Commonwealth gold medallists and world cup winning teams. Jo joined Brighton as Head of School in 2006 from Head of Sport & Exercise Science at the University in Aberystwyth where he was also Director of R & D for the local NHS Trust.

832IanC.JPG Prof Ian Campbell - Chair Elect

Ian Campbell is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Relations (with responsibility for the Olympic Games) and Teaching Quality, and is a Professor of Exercise Physiology.

Ian’s area of research expertise is concerned with the physiology of the spinal cord injured athlete and he gained his PhD from Loughborough University in 1992. He has an international reputation in this area and has published his work in international journals and has given invited presentations in the USA, China and Europe. He has also attracted external funding to pursue his research and has a number of successful PhD completions in this field of study. His work, and that of his PhD students, has attracted national awards and media coverage. As a result of his research expertise he led a team providing sport science support to wheelchair racing for two Paralympic games and was part of the Great Britain Paralympic support team in the Year 2000, which took place in Sydney, Australia.

Dr Keith Tolfrey, FBASES - Chair of the Division for Physical Activity for Health

Keith’s primary research interests relate to health in young people (children and adolescents) and how this might be influenced by either structured exercise training or participation in regular physical activity. Some of his work has focused on physiological determinants of endurance performance such as maximal lactate steady state, economy, and peak oxygen uptake in young people. He has, however, also collaborated on various projects focusing on wheelchair sports performance and oxygen uptake kinetics. Current research interests include fat metabolism, postprandial lipaemia, and estimation of energy expenditure in physical activity in young people. From the teaching and learning perspective Keith enjoys working with students on most aspects of exercise physiology, but also has a keen interest in research methods and quantitative statistics.
