Founded in 1985, the mission of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) is to help athletes optimise their performance and safeguard their health through research and education in hydration and sports nutrition science. With headquarters in the US at Barrington, Illinois, GSSI scientists study the effects of exercise, the environment, and nutrition on the human body. In addition to research accomplished in four in-house laboratories, GSSI collaborates with universities and researchers around the world to undertake research in exercise science and sports nutrition. The Institute is internationally recognised for its research and education offerings which serve nearly 100,000 subscribers in more than 145 countries.

Internship opportunities:
Gatorade has teamed up with Premier Rugby to give 6 sport science students and/or graduates the opportunity to do a 6 week work experience programme with Premier Rugby’s Summer Junior Academy. Premiership Rugby clubs include Gloucester RFC, Saracens RFC and Northampton RFC.

The role will last from Monday 26th July until the beginning of September with the possible opportunity of extending this to the Christmas and Easter holidays.

The internship programme will provide the student with the following:

  • Experience working with Gatorade, the No1 sports drinks in the World and GSSI, one of the most respected sports science institutes
  • Experience working with Premier Rugby and at Premiership rugby clubs
  • Tuition by GSSI Scientific advisor Dr Ian Rollo
  • Work experience in giving presentations, providing consultation to Junior Rugby players and coaches

Job description:

This role will consist of the following:

  • Attending a ‘hydration tuition day’ provided by GSSI Scientific advisor, Dr Ian Rollo on Wednesday 21st July
  • Daily presentation on ‘The Importance of Hydration’ given to junior rugby players and coaches at the camps (presentation will be provided)
  • Educating junior players on hydration, through hydration testing and general advice
  • Being a Gatorade ambassador and ensuring brand messages are communicated
  • Promoting the ‘Gatorade Gives Back’ campaign to the rugby community
  • Producing weekly blog updates for the GSSI website and an overall final write up for the GSSI ezine

Role requirements:

This is an extremely exciting and unique opportunity. Prospective candidates will need to possess the following core skills:

  • Completed or in the process of completing a sports related degree
  • General interest in all sports particularly team sports, especially rugby
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Approachable and well mannered
  • Fitness training background would be beneficial
  • Proactive nature and a passion for delivering the highest performance
  • A full, clean driving licence would be beneficial as rugby clubs maybe remote
