| Debbie started on the 1 July 2008 to cover
maternity leave for Claire Hitchings. She studied Business at Northumbria University and then worked for British
Airways for many years in sales, marketing and project management roles. During this time she was the Sales and
Operations Manager for the 2000 Sydney Olympics working very closely with the British Olympic Association. A few years were then spent living and working overseas teaching scuba diving in tropical waters such as Thailand, Australia and Mexico. A return to the UK saw an involvement in sport again, most recently being based at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Debbie has taken up sailing, windsurfing and water skiing this year and is wondering what to try next! |

Martin is a lecturer at the University of Essex since 1979; his first academic position after 2 years post-doc in the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in New Jersey. Having lectured in Physiology, Immunology and Reproduction for over 10 years he metamorphosed into an exercise physiologist after a period of sabbatical leave with Will Hopkins in New Zealand and returned to Essex to set up the Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences. He is passionate about teaching and learning and my priority as Director of Sports Science at Essex is ensuring the quality of provision at both undergraduate and post graduate level. He has been a member of BASES since 1995 and served as Chair of the Workshop Committee 2005-2007. But, to be honest, he would rather be orienteering, mountain biking, adventure racing, doing triathlons, windsurfing or skiing (all badly).
