Paediatric Exercise Science Interest Groups

The BASES special interest group in Paediatric Exercise Science was launched in October 2005. Paediatric Exercise Science typically encompasses biological, biomechanical, environmental, psychological and sociological investigations as applied to the growing and maturing child. These investigations often overlap from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. However, at the centre of these investigations is the acknowledgement that individual variation brought about by growth and maturation make it a unique problem not faced by researchers working with adults. Over the last 15-20 years the critical accumulation of research literature has developed this area into an academic discipline in its own right.

A number of articles related to paediatric exercise science were published in the March 2003 BASES World.

Aims

Our primary aim is to integrate practitioners and researchers who work within paediatric exercise science to raise the national profile of children's health, sport and well-being. Specifically we wish to:

1. Actively promote paediatric exercise science as an academic sub discipline of study.
2. Initiate research and disseminate findings to professionals in sports medicine, exercise science and paediatric health promotion.
3. Establish international affiliations and partnerships.
4. Provide a platform for the development of new and young researchers in paediatric exercise science.
5. Develop workshops to promote best practice when working with children.
