Individual Accreditation

BASES is concerned with setting, maintaining and enhancing the professional and ethical standards of its members who are actively involved in sport and exercise science.

High standards are promoted in two particular ways:

1.      Through the adoption of a strict .pdf documentBASES Code of Conduct to which all members must adhere. Violation of this code of conduct can result in sanctions, including removal of accreditation. The code of conduct serves to ensure a minimum level of service to individuals or groups who make use of the range of services offered by sport and exercise scientists.

2. BASES accreditation is awarded to those practitioners who are deemed by the Association to have the minimum knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to be safe and fit to practice as a sport and exercise scientist.

Members may achieve accreditation as a result of work in applied sport/exercise science support, research or pedagogy. In all cases the process and the judgement of generic knowledge, skills and professional practice will apply although how these are expressed and the "client" group will differ.

Those accredited by BASES are entitled to use the term ‘BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist’ while they still fully meet all the relevant accreditation criteria.

Routes to Accreditation

The normal route to accreditation is via successfully completing the BASES supervised experience process; this is the route that it is recommended applicants take, especially those who are in the early stages of their sport and exercise science career.

Applicants who already have significant experience working within the profession may be in a position to apply directly for accreditation.

All accredited individuals and those undergoing supervised experience towards accreditation are expected to work only within their areas of competence. Thus, the system provides potential clients from sport and exercise groups with the means to ensure that the services they receive will be both safe and effective as possible.

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED SUPERVISED EXPERIENCE

BASES has launched a new Supervised Experience and Accreditation Scheme.

All supervisees were given the opportunity to remain on the current scheme or transfer onto the new scheme.  For those supervisees that have remained on the previous system, there is no change during the period of Supervised Experience.

However, all applications for Accreditation will be under the new system.

Applicants who have completed the previous Supervised Experience scheme:

Supervisees who have completed the previous Supervised Experience scheme, should refer to the Pre-December 2009 SE Route within the Accreditation Guidelines.  Applications should include:

·         Completed application form

·         Confirmation of professional membership

·         Payment of £75 application fee

·         Agreement to abide by the BASES Code of Conduct

·         Agreement to hold appropriate Professional Liability Insurance

·         1 page summary CV

·         Scanned proof of all relevant qualifications

·         Contacts details for 3 referees

·         Completed competency profile.  This should include at least one case study following the BASES guidelines.

·         Evidence of a BASES recognised degree or a transcript to document content of undergraduate degree

·         Evidence of a postgraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science or a related discipline or evidence via my
submitted portfolio of equivalent underpinning knowledge level

Applicants should complete the Accreditation Competency Profile. You will be required to demonstrate how you meet the new generic competencies which can be translated from the competencies you have been working towards during your SE. You should annotate on the Competency Profile where the evidence is provided, in your Annual Reports, to achieve a competency.  All supporting evidence must be sent in one readable file. The recommended process is to scan all documents into a word document and then convert this to a PDF to make it small enough to email through. If you are unable to do this then you may send a CD or memory stick containing 1 word file to the BASES office. BASES is unable to return items sent. Please do not resubmit your annual reports. A case study must be included with your application, this could be one that has been used previously or one that you have developed to demonstrate the new competencies.

You should provide evidence of your undergraduate and postgraduate degrees but at this stage they do not have to be BASES endorsed.

You are not required to have completed a specific number of hours practice.

For those applicants who are on the new Supervised Experience process, which was introduced from December 2009, you should refer to the Supervised Experience Route, within Appendix 2 of the Accreditation Guidelines.  This will guide you to the documents required for your Accreditation application.

Re-accreditation requires the applicant to demonstrate continued delivery of services and continued to development as a practitioner via:

  • Continued application and delivery
  • On-going record of personal development activities and subsequent reflection
  • Feedback from mentors/clients
