BASES Special Interest Group Coaching

The BASES Coaching Special Interest Group (SIG) was established at the 2003 BASES Annual Conference held in Sheffield. Membership of the Coaching SIG stands at around 40, from across the four BASES’ sections, and is open to any BASES member with an interest in academic advancement in relation to the study of coaching.

Aims of the Coaching SIG

  • To promote the academic study of sport coaching* by developing and supporting coach- and coaching-focused research from a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives
  • To provide leadership in the academic study and researching of sport coaching
  • To provide guidance and other scholarly input to organisations and individuals concerned with promoting sport coaching
  • To raise awareness of the significance of the coach and the coaching process within the study and practice of sport and exercise sciences
  • To work closely with other interested and appropriate bodies (within and outside of BASES) in pursuit of these aims
  • To provide a forum in which the above can be facilitated.

*The term ‘sport coaching’ is used here as an inclusive term that embraces a range of coaching behaviours in competitive and recreational sport, as well as exercise and other physical activity settings. The concept of sports coaching is itself acknowledged as a legitimate area for investigation and debate.
