BIG 2012 Meeting

As previously announced in late spring, the next BASES Biomechanics Interest Group (BIG) meeting will be held at the University of Ulster on Wednesday 4th April 2012 from 10am - 4.30pm. The keynote speaker, basic meeting outline, and important dates are listed below. More information can be found on the BIG 2012 website (http://www.science.ulster.ac.uk/big2012/)

KEYNOTE:
********************************************************
It is our pleasure to announce that the keynote speaker will be Professor Joseph Hamill, Professor of  Biomechanics in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts.. The topic of his keynote will be "Rearfoot and forefoot footfall patterns: Implications for running-related injuries".

Prof. Hamill’s research interests are focused on lower extremity biomechanics during normal and pathological locomotion. He has authored or co-authored over 120 research papers, several book chapters and three books. He has also presented over 170 papers at local, national and international conferences. Prof. Hamill has utilised motion capture, modelling and dynamical systems to study the optimisation of human locomotion. This keynote presentation will reflect on the factors that influence footfall patterns during running and the subsequent associations with running-related injuries.

Adding to the keynote, the meeting will feature a panel discussion on ‘Performance and Injury Benefits of Barefoot/Minimalist Footwear versus Conventional Footwear’. The panel will include Dr. Mark Lake (Liverpool John Moores University), Prof. Joe Hamill (University of Massachusetts) and two other researchers/practitioners (still to be confirmed).

Over the lunch break, there will be an opportunity to attend a golf biomechanics demonstration in our new lab facilities. This demo will be facilitated by Qualisys and will feature real-time analyses of body and club kinematics, ball-impact location data, Trackman ball launch data and kinetic analyses.

Qualisys have also kindly agreed to sponsor two student prizes for the best abstract submissions. These prizes are valued at £100 and £75 and the winners will be announced at the meeting.

We will also have time for about 11 oral presentations and required number of poster presentations, as in the previous BIG meetings.

IMPORTANT DATES for your calendar:
*********************************************************
* The paper submission deadline is on Wednesday 22nd February 2012 (further instructions and the template will be provided in December).

* Author notification on Monday 5th March 2012 (in order that everyone gets information well before the Easter break)

* Registration deadline is on Wednesday 7th March 2012.

You will find lots of useful information relating to accommodation, travel, etc. on our website http://www.science.ulster.ac.uk/big2012/

If you require any further information at this stage (or you would like to be removed from future BIG 2012 emails) please do not hesitate to contact Dr Michael Hanlon (m.hanlon@ulster.ac.uk)

Best regards Dr Michael Hanlon and Professor Eric Wallace

Together we can make biomechanics a really “BIG” deal…!
