Aim
The BASES Career Development Grants aim to assist with career development opportunities for BASES members who are normally at a relatively early stage of their sport and exercise sciences careers. Applications are welcomed to assist with professional development within sport and exercise sciences (e.g., work in applied sport/exercise science support, research or pedagogy). This can include fees for courses/workshops/conferences, purchase of equipment/consumables, travel and costs associated with a placement or work experience (Please see Terms and Conditions below for more information). Four grants of up to £500 are available.
Grant Criteria
- The applicant must be a member of BASES and hold a sport and exercise science-related degree.
- The applicant has not submitted an application for a BASES Career Development Grant within the past year.
- The applicant has not received a BASES Career Development Grant within the past 3 years.
- Applications will be reviewed and judged on: The extent of personal career development of the applicant that the grant will enable; the clarity with which the applicant has explained his/her career ambitions and how the grant application fits with these; and the possible future impact of the applicant in his/her field and how the grant will assist.
- Applications not adhering to the grant criteria will not be considered.
- The decision is final in all cases and no correspondence will be entered into.
- These grants will not be made in the absence of submissions of sufficient merit.
- The applicant must submit 1 electronic copy of the required documents to the BASES Office by the closing date.
Terms and Conditions
- In making an application for a grant, the applicant agrees to abide by each of the terms and conditions contained within this schedule, upon and following any award of a grant.
- This schedule, together with the requirements set out in the application guidelines and any subsequent grant offer letter, constitute the agreement between BASES and the recipient.
- BASES career development grants may be used for: i. Fees for courses/workshops/conferences including the BASES Annual Conference and BASES Annual Student Conference, etc. specifically related to development of skills and knowledge appropriate to the proposed work. ii. Travel and other expenses, such as accommodation, associated with working with their client group or attending training courses, etc. This can be in the UK or overseas. iii. Purchase of equipment/consumables. iv. Costs associated with a placement, visit or work experience.
- BASES career development grants may not be used for: i. Paying for supervision for Supervised Experience or other payments to individuals for training, etc. ii. Membership of professional bodies, etc. iii. Work directly associated with credits for a higher education course (e.g., an MSc or PhD).
- The grant awarded shall not be used for any purpose other than that stated in the grant application form. The recipient must notify BASES of the changes, so that the grant can be re-assessed.
- BASES reserves the right to use the winners' names, photographs and opinions in future publicity or promotional material, and by submitting an application the applicant consents to such use.
- Estimates are permissible in applications where exact figures are not yet known, e.g. for travel costs. Please note that BASES will not pay more than the agreed amount and will only reimburse the actual cost if this is less than the estimate.
- Each quarter recipients of a grant shall submit a quarterly expense claim form, including all receipts. Funds must be spent between 1 March of the year the grant is awarded and end of February of the following year. By end of February recipients of a grant shall submit a final expense claim form, including all receipts. Some grants may be completed over a shorter time period than one year. In such cases, items 9 and 10 would normally be completed within three months of the work being finished. The 12 month period referred to above is a maximum.
- The following year recipients of a grant shall submit an article (650 words maximum) for consideration for The Sport and Exercise Scientist. The article shall comply with’ Guidelines for Contributors to The Sport and Exercise Scientist’. The emphasis should be on contributing to the continuing professional development of sport and exercise scientists by promoting evidence-based practice. Recipients must liaise with Dr Claire Hitchings prior to writing the article.
- If an expense claim form and an article for The Sport and Exercise Scientist are not received by the end of February, recipients will lose any unclaimed funds for the grant and will be ineligible for funding again.
- The payment of a grant is subject, at all times, to BASES being satisfied that all these conditions are being complied with. Failure to do so may result in grant entitlements being rescinded, and grant payments having to be refunded to BASES.
